A Glimpse of Our Initiatives

Our Therapeutic Community - The Children's Home

Attempting to evolve a best practice model for post-trauma care and rehabilitation of child survivors of violence.

Our survivors include

  • Survivors of sexual violence and trafficking
  • Children from abandonment/ neglect/ other forms of abuse
  • Any other at-risk categories

All our children are placed with us by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for care and protection.

At the children’s home, we have the following offerings

  • Post-trauma care and healing enablers: In addition to conventional methods like counseling and psychotherapy, we have attempted to use life with animals as a healing enabler. Further, various extracurricular activities aimed at confidence building, have their own impact on the healing of our survivors.
  • We provide assistance under the criminal justice process, through legal aid via partner organizations, to increase possibilities of convictions.
  • Support with education involves enrollment of children who are mainstream-ready in mainstream schools and colleges, and attempts to bring children who are not mainstream-ready within the folds of mainstream education by providing them with bridge education support, through our in-house bridge education programme, Setu.

Setu Bridge Learning & Vocational Training Centre Programme

To bridge our children who are not mainstream ready and similar children from neighbouring migrant labour households into mainstream education, and provide marketable vocational skills to adolescents.

Setu was born on Dec 3, 2019. This programme, is in the larger scheme of things, our prevention initiative.

Most children in our Children’s Home are not mainstream ready (do not have the necessary literacy or concept knowledge) to join mainstream schools at age-appropriate standards. Children of migrant labour, also face similar challenges with schooling, given their migratory lifestyles.

One method of bringing such children back into the folds of mainstream education, is bridge education. In our Bridge Learning Centre – Setu, we attempt to get such children certified under Open Basic Education (OBE), and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). This, we do through a graduated approach of imparting literacy and numeracy skills and plugging concept gaps.

While Komal Mohan from our leadership has taken the whole load on her experienced shoulders, many volunteers and employees lend their time to teach the children.

The older children are also undergoing vocational training so that they become employable at the earliest. The vocational training so far includes Tailoring, Basic Computer Skills, and Beautician Training. We hope to add Electronics soon.

The first day, saw the kids all huddled together. Today, their eyes are lit up and the skip in their step, when they come in, by itself is an affirmation that we are on the right track.

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) Awareness & Trafficking Prevention Programme

This programme seeks to generate awareness about CSA and trafficking, in vulnerable segments.

This programme generates awareness among all segments of the society, towards CSA and Gender Based Violence (GBV), to enable a change in the way we as a society perceive and respond to the safety needs of Children and Women.

We offer CSA Awareness Workshops for children, educators, and parents.

Personal Safety and GBV Awareness Workshops for adults are also conducted as needed.
