Other Activities

Setu, Bridge Program for Children

SETU was born on Dec 2, 2019. A Bridge Initiative by Swakshatra to bridge children in our neighbourhood into age-appropriate class in a Kannada medium local school.

These are children of migrant labour who for various reasons did not go to school or dropped out of the schooling system. It is heartening to see the kind of volunteer support that has come into this project.

While Komal Mohan has taken the whole load on her experienced shoulders, there are many volunteers who lend their time to teach the children English, Kannada and Maths. They coach them Alphabets, Arithmetic et al. The older children are also undergoing vocational training so that they become employable at the earliest and provide support to their weary and tired parents. The vocational so far includes tailoring, baking, and cosmetics. We hope to add embroidery too soon. The first day saw the kids all huddled together.

Today, their eyes are lit up and the skip in their step, when they come in by itself, is an affirmation that we are on the right track.

Animal Asistance

Animal Assisted Intervention is a popular program all over the world to heal people from serious illness, trauma, etc. We have tweaked it a little bit so the animals are benefited as well.

At Swakshatra the children are not only healing themselves, but also heal the animals that need care by fostering, nursing them back to health.

We provide medical and at-home recovery care to dogs and cats in our neighborhood. It typically involves visiting the vet, giving the animal medications at the right time, changing their dressing, feeding and walking them. One of the children has taken the lead while four other children work actively with her.

We hope that the special bond they develop with the animals becomes an immense learning experience and their rehabilitation process is accelerated when they nurture these hapless creatures.
